Character Information
Character Name: Irisa Nolan/Nyira
Canon: Defiance | TV show
Canon Point: Season 1, Episode 11 "Past is Prologue" after Rynn finds Irisa
History: Wiki link here
Personality: A lot of Irisa’s personality comes from her history and her race. She is an Irathient, an alien species that was displaced from their home when their solar system was destroyed. Irathients are more feral and less sophisticated, believing in ancient gods like Irzu and worshipping in rather primitive ways. They are very ritualistic and attached to the earth, not unlike Native Americans.
As an Irathient, Irisa has a very short temper and a fierce fighting disposition. She is quick to anger and takes a long time to forgive any tresspasses. While she claims not to believe in Irzu, she starts to develop a belief in some kind of higher power as time goes on and enjoys spending time praying with the “family”, the Spirit Rider Irathients that welcome her into their homes. Irisa also has a habit of ignoring what is considered human decency. She will leave without saying goodbye or giving any direction as to where she is going, and does not often talk even when giving an answer would be polite. Irisa is generally a woman of few words, allowing Nolan, her adoptive father, to speak for her.
But Irisa isn’t just an Irathient. She was raised by a human parent, Joshua Nolan, who took her in after rescuing her from a cult that ritualistically tortured her. Because of this, she is torn between two worlds, that of the humans and that of the Irathients. She is naturally distrusting, though she’s desperate to have someone to understand her and talk to her. She takes to the Spirit Riders so well simply because they are the same race as her. They can understand more things about her than Nolan can. Try as Nolan might, he is not an Irath and therefore doesn’t get it like the Spirit Riders do. Raised in a human world also made Irisa more afraid of her alien nature, the unusual abilities she has that are supposedly granted her by Irzu. She struggles with her faith and who she truly is, unsure which way of life is the right one.
Irisa always carries weapons on her at all times. Even in peaceful situations, she has a knife strapped somewhere. Once, she slips one in her garter just to have one on her. Nothing makes her feel safe like knowing she is capable of defending herself. Having a weapon on her means that she is never defenseless, and that she is able to fight and kill, if necessary, at all times. She was raised in the badlands, a dangerous area that required her to toughen up and know how to fight. She thrives in this environment, building a thick wall around herself to defend herself from any kind of hurt, even emotional hurt. Being an abuse victim has made her cling to her knives even more. The idea of being defenseless as she was as a child is perhaps her greatest fear. She keeps people at arms’ length until they have proven themselves to her. Irisa’s trust, once earned, is forever, though she expects a lot out of the ones she trusts, simply because there are so few. She is fiercely loyal of her friends, willing to put herself at great risk for them, and actually shows them some affection. In canon, there are only a few, namely Nolan, Tommy, and Sukar, but all three are given attention and love in their own way. Irisa often greets Sukar with a grin and runs into his arms for a hug. Nolan gets the same treatment, as well as cuddling, and Tommy she allows to hold her hand.
Another part of her personality comes from her age. She is still so young, likely in her late teens or early twenties (it isn’t canonically stated, and her Irathient blood may make her age differently than humans). She is confused and knows nothing but violence and fighting her way out of problems. She has never had a home. All she has are her dreams, and even those feel silly and childish to her. Irisa wants to be as tough and hard as she pretends to be, but inside she’s just confused who and what she is.
The one thing that she feels truly defines her is her adoptive father, Joshua Nolan. She is fiercely loyal to him and loves him more than anything else. The only constant she has ever had is Nolan, and she will fight and die to defend him. They have one rule, they live or die together, and it keeps them bound to each other almost more definitively than their relationship. They refuse to go anywhere separately. The only time they are alright with being separated is when Irisa participates in Irathient rituals, which humans are forbidden to attend. Nolan taught her how to fight and affectionately refers to her as “his little girl”. He is the only one for whom she will publically show affection. When Tommy Lesalle asks her what it is that keeps her and Nolan together, she explains, “he did something for me I couldn’t do for myself. … He killed my parents.”
Despite her tough demeanor, Irisa is most certainly capable of affection towards others than just Nolan. She develops a particular bond for Tommy, who earns her respect and trust through having her back at all times and showing a genuine concern for her. This is so alien to her that she quickly grows fond of him, to the point of a physical relationship. She even, on one particular occasion, dresses up nicely and holds his hand, nonverbally agreeing to be his “date”.
In short, Irisa has a tough outward appearance to keep herself safe, though once her trust is earned, love comes quickly after that.
Items on your character at canon point: Her knives, jewelry - necklace and wrist cuffs, a hailer (similar to a walkie talkie), aknife holster for her back, a Votan pistol, Roller (car) keys, whetstone, her journal, her red coat, chaps that also serve as knife holsters, and this ridiculous pair of sunglasses.
Abilities, Strengths and Weaknesses: Irisa’s main strength would be her familiarity with weapons. She has a set of knives that she is deadly with, using them both as projectile weapons and in hand to hand combat. She is also an expert in using guns and Votan blades. While the guns she is familiar with are advanced alien technology, she is also not unused to guns that require bullets. She is stronger than the average human of the same age and is not beneath biting with her sharp Irathiant teeth.
Irisa has been gifted with a rather unique ability, that of the Sight. Other Irathients believe that this has marked her as a Chosen of Irzu, though Irisa is unsure. She is capable of seeing events from the past, present, and future in her dreams and during the day as well, in fits that appear to the viewer to be a seizure.
As an Irathient, Irisa rarely, if ever, gets sick. Her people are known as “disease carriers” because they often carry diseases but never show any symptoms. Unfortunately, this has led to disasters such as the forced immunization of Iraths in Defiance, which triggered open rebellion and thousands of deaths. Irathiants were also gathered up by Castithans and gassed in an attempt to stop a plague.
Irisa is fluent in both English and the natural tongue of the Irathients. She can also write in both languages.
However, Irisa is hotheaded and quick to anger. She is aggressive, violent, and does not follow orders (unless given by those few that she respects, and even then sometimes she won’t). The people that she loves, she loves just as fiercely and aggressively. She is incredibly passionate, her moods unpredictable, and proud. She will never admit when she is wounded, and rather than address the things that bother her, she instead will go about in a sweeping temper.

[Irisa sticks to audio for now. She’s too used to her hailer, and besides, the humans here are all acting strange about seeing an Irathient, like they’ve never seen one before or something. It’s unnerving, being stared at, though she acts like she doesn’t care.]
Nolan, Tommy, if you can hear me, you’re both idiots.. [In the background there’s the steady shhhhick shhhhick as she sharpens her knives.]
To everyone else… Tell me what planet this is. I’ve never seen terraforming like this. [Pause.] ...It is terraformed, isn’t it?
[How strange that would be, to be on a planet in it’s natural state.]
[There’s another pause, filled only with the sound of Irisa sharpening her knives.] If you aren’t Nolan or Tommy but you know where to find them, tell me.
If this is part of some sick experiment, Yewl, E-Rep… You’re dead. I am no one’s savior, or angel of death, whatever. It’s stupid and so are you.
[There’s a small click, and the line goes dead.]
Prose Log Sample:
Irisa sighed softly to herself as she looked at Tommy, fast asleep beside her and stark naked. He had one arm around her in a loose embrace, and she tolerated it quietly.
She would never admit that she loved these moments. She would never tell him it was more than just sex to her too, that she loved the physical and emotional connection it gave her with someone. Never before had she felt quite so...complete. So content and satisfied with herself. It was such a different, conflicted, confusing emotion that she’d never really experienced. Irisa settled into him a bit more, allowing herself to be vulnerable, and closed her eyes.
Vulnerable. She hated that word. It seemed almost synonymous with victim, in her mind. She was better than this, better than the scared little girl she had been when Nolan found her. Her clothes were halfway across the room, along with all her knives, and usually that scared her half to death. Not having a blade within arm’s reach ordinarily made her feel like she was asking for trouble, like those cultists would come back and tie her up and torture her within an inch of her life.
She shivered slightly and Tommy made a soft sound in response, holding her a little closer. There was something about him, something about this moment, that made her feel so safe. No one could hurt her when she was with him. The idea was so preposterous that she would have scoffed if she could, but she couldn’t deny what she felt.
But life was so damned fragile. Just one well placed bullet, or a knife, or a Votan weapon, and it was all over. That’s all it took to end the dark-skinned human beside her. (She wouldn’t call him her lover. It was too…sentimental.) Irisa slid her hand on his chest to rest over his heart, feeling it beat beneath her fingers.
No. No, she wouldn’t let anything happen to him. Carefully, she slid out of his arms and to her feet, gathering up her clothes and getting dressed. She reached for a blade, holding it loosely in her hand, and returned to Tommy’s side.
A part of her knew this was ridiculous, waiting up with a knife in her hand to kill any intruders that might decide to take Tommy’s life. Defiance was a relatively peaceful place, after all. No one was going to break in and take him away from her. But she couldn’t shake the feeling that he was fragile. That he needed her protection, even if it was just for this one night. In the morning he would laugh at her, tell her she was being absurd and ask if it was some Irathient thing.
And in the morning, she would laugh with him and kiss his lips and silently rejoice in the fact that she had one more day with him.
